The talent show's replacement for Tulisa is that rarest of creatures: a woman over the age of 50 on primetime TVWearing huge black shades and flanked by half-naked men wearing kilts, Sharon Osbourne is not your typical "nan", despite describing herself as such today. For a start, she is a 60-year-old woman who is about to make a comeback on primetime British television.Osbourne's return to the judging panel of talent show The X Factor makes her one of 18% of all presenters, primetime or graveyard slot, who are women over 50. In coming back to the show she left in 2007, she replaces that erstwhile scion of youth-enticing talent, Tulisa Contostavlos, 24.Head judge Gary Barlow sees her arrival as restoring the balance between musicians and managers on the panel. He could have added that, alongside Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger, she also makes it both gender and age balanced, against all expectations. As Simon Cowell said: "Three words I never thought I'd say … Welcome back Sharon!"Before you all rush to scream that it's not just about the numbers, at least Osbourne is funny and gives the impression of knowing what she is talking about, after a career that includes running a business, managing stars including her husband Ozzy and appearing in her own long-running show. You may not warm to her, of course; personally, I thought her description of grandmothers was a bit patronising ("I shouldn't be head judge. I laugh too much and I'm not serious enough. I'm the nan of the panel").Her description of what makes someone a success, a swipe at rival talent show The Voice, suggests she has no time for those, such as Anna Ford, who believe women should be allowed to become as "rumpled" as their male counterparts either. "You can have the best voice in the world and the oldest saying is: 'They've got the perfect face for radio.' You've got to have the personality, the likability."But who cares? She makes good telly. She enhances ITV's recent record of putting a few more women over 50 on air (most popular morning presenter? Fifty-three-year-old Lorraine Kelly). All at an age when most women are expected to potter off and do the gardening. That's worth 110%, surely? The X FactorTelevisionEntertainmentWomenSharon OsbourneJane Martinson

When is "effing" offensive? When it's used emphatically, according to Ofcom. Or so the media regulator concluded in ruling on 52 complaints about The X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger describing last year's eventual winner as James "effing" Arthur, ahead of a do-or-die performance to stay in the talent show. Ofcom recognised that it is not in itself a swear word, being a substitute for the F-bomb, but ruled that Sherzinger's "emphatic" use made it offensive. ITV, which had previously had to warn the former Pussycat Doll about using the word "frickin", put it down to "differing levels of offence that a US and UK audience may attach to this particular term". So a flipping heck's out of the question, then?OfcomTelevision industryThe X FactorTelevisionEntertainmentUnited StatesMonkey

Osbourne, who was last a judge on the show six years ago, will replace Tulisa ContostavlosSharon Osbourne will return to The X Factor judging panel to replace Tulisa Contostavlos, ITV has confirmed. She will join Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow and Nicole Scherzinger – who have all signed up – on the ITV series when it comes back to screens later this year.Osbourne, last on the show as a judge six years ago, had been widely expected to return after it emerged she had been in negotiation with programme chiefs. She said she "couldn't be happier" about her comeback. The line-up announcement means Simon Cowell will be absent for a third year. His departure coincided with a ratings tumble for the show which was last year regularly beaten by BBC1 rival Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday nights.Osbourne is reported to have been offered more than £1m for her return to the panel. Viewers last year saw her briefly make an appearance on the show at the judges' houses stage of the contest.Auditions for the next series begin early next month so the panellists had to be in place by then. She said: "I couldn't be happier about coming back for the 10th anniversary of X Factor."I can't wait to give Gary Barlow a big hug, sit next to the gorgeous Nicole, and of course throw water on dear Louis. Yay!"Cowell said: "Three words I never thought I'd say: welcome back Sharon."Contostavlos announced on Twitter on Tuesday that she was not coming back to the programme.Sharon OsbourneTelevisionThe X FactorEntertainmentSimon Cowell

The quivering cabaret singer has had a masterstroke – book public events so far in advance that future fame is guaranteedFame can be fleeting, particularly for The X Factor runners-up who routinely have only eight months to make their mark before a fresh batch of hopefuls arrives in August. So it's great to know that Christopher Maloney, the quivering, nan-loving bête orange of last year's The X Factor, has found a way to extend his time in the spotlight.Maloney's trick, and this is quite the masterstroke, seems to involve booking public events so far in advance that his fame is guaranteed until at least that date. Reckon you might be thinking about 2013's X Factor lineup come December? Boom: Maloney is already booked in for a guaranteed appearance at Pontin's on 31 December, meaning that those present will have him in their thoughts until at least a few minutes into 2014. That's already a career that spans three years! Maloney's novel approach to temporal distortion extends to his online presence. Just as his no-frills cabaret honking recalled a more simple time in the history of light entertainment, so his official website refers to a less complicated era of website development, only the absence of an Altavista website address hinting that the site might have been built in the last 15 years. If you wish, you can sign up to receive his version of Hoobastank's The Reason, a cover version that is, appropriately, timeless in its awfulness. But it's Chris's knack for owning all our futures that will pay dividends, and it also applies to his debut single. The fashion may be for stars to instantly release their work, or to take people by surprise with an untrumpeted iTunes release. Not Maloney. He's already teasing a single that's due in September, which feels like a pop lifetime away. It's only a few months, of course, but if Chris sets his album release for June 2018, he'll be laughing.CelebrityThe X FactorTelevisionEntertainmentPeter Robinson

Leading opera singer says shows such as The X Factor give false hope to singers who need years of intense trainingDame Kiri Te Kanawa has questioned the value of TV talent shows such as The X Factor, saying it takes years of commitment and study to become a professional singer.Te Kanawa, 69, who has been a leading international soprano since the late 1960s, said there was no such thing as "overnight success" in opera."I've been criticised for even mentioning things like The X Factor, but I'm always wary of someone who is a bus driver and decides, aged 28, that they want to be a singer," she told Radio Times, in an interview published in the magazine's latest edition."There's got to be a period of study, from age 16 to 22, and then it moves along. You can't just think: 'Oh, I can sing in the bathroom, I'll be fine tonight on stage.' Not at all. There is such a demand on the voice for it to be able to produce night after night. It's the building up of the muscles that make that pair of vocal cords really work."Te Kanawa, who has made some recordings from musicals, including West Side Story, said she thought it was difficult for professional singers to move successfully between disciplines."I think a showgirl singing show tunes is great. An opera singer singing opera is great," she added. "Basically, I've done both and I find that I'm happier with the music I'm taught to sing."She also said she feared too much emphasis was placed on opera singers' appearance, saying sometimes "they're more beautiful than their voice"."You've got to have beef on you if you're going to sing," Te Kanawa said. "I was never really hugely big, but I certainly weighed more than I do now. I ate to sing. If I started to get a bit lumpy round the middle, I would start thinking, 'Well, I must get it off,' but I was also aware of how much I couldn't or shouldn't take off."Te Kanawa is patron and jury member for the biennial BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, now in its 30th year, with 20 finalists selected from 400 applicants from 17 countries taking to the stage next week."It's all about the singer. It's not about the conductor. I like to see that the singer has got the stage – for them and them alone."EntertainmentThe X FactorOperaClassical musicMusicalsTheatreTelevisionJason Deans

(RCA)Say what you like about this thoroughly dispiriting corporate commodity, you cannot deny its production values. It may be entirely comprised of covers, from the predictable (Emeli Sandé's Next to Me) to the dull (Beyoncé's Halo) to the sacrilegious (Bob Dylan's Forever Young). Douglas, the runner-up on last year's X Factor, may deliver each number in the technically proficient, emotionally vapid style that only highlights the gap between copy and original. The mood may be one of religious ecstacy, something not only inauthentic but unconvincing when repeated consistently across an album. There may be harps, harpsichords, and even – which hurts most of all – a hack piece of harmonica from Stevie Wonder, which is so pointed a reminder of what this album is entirely not that it almost feels compulsory to laugh. This album may be all of these things, but seeing as someone has stumped up the requisite dosh to get a proper engineer in, it all sounds very expensive.Rating: 1/5Pop and rockUrban musicThe X FactorTelevisionEntertainmentPaul MacInnes

The media reported last month that Sharon Osbourne's £1.8m deal to return to The X Factor included a £1,000-a-night room at Claridge's during the filming of the series. But the Sun reports that the star's arrangements haven't gone quite to plan. After a power cut at the posh hotel, she was forced to prepare for the show at a Premier Inn, where rooms cost from £29 up. Monkey wonders whether the star ended up as grumpy as Lenny Henry in his recreation of The Shining for a Premier Inn ad a few years back.ITV channelITV plcTelevision industrySharon OsbourneThe X FactorTelevisionEntertainmentMonkey

Louis Walsh is to earn less than the other three The X Factor judges for the next series – despite being the longest-serving member of the panel. The Sun reports that Simon Cowell has lured Sharon Osbourne back with an offer of £1.5m plus £300,000 to cover flights and stays at London's Dorchester during filming on the series. Gary Barlow and Nicole Scherzinger will also earns £1.5m. Altogether the judges' paybill has risen from £3.7m last year to £5.8m plus expenses this year. Tulisa Contostavlos will be doubly ruing her exit as a judge, while Cowell will be praying that the £6m can help add some sparkle to the show's flagging ratings. Is the X Factor finally running out of (young) talent? Simon Cowell's ITV show has found its oldest ever star, a 94-year-old man who is part of a band aptly called The Nostalgics, which has a lineup that includes a member that just had a pacemaker fitted. Nevertheless, the Sun reports, the 10-piece group, which wound forward the clock several generations to play Katy Perry's Firework to a crowd at Wembley Arena, have been chosen to make it through to the boot camp stage of X Factor. Producers hold fears of how they will do among mostly youngsters tearing up the living quarters at boot camp (combined age of One Direction's five stars is 98, just four years older than the Nostalgic's oldest member), but it looks to be tea and toast over vodka and kebabs.Simon CowellITV channelITV plcTelevision industryThe X FactorTelevisionEntertainmentMonkey

Boyband superstars, and their nans, vandalised phone boxes, screaming fans. In 3D. Directed by Morgan SpurlockReading on mobile? Click here to see the videoOne Direction are possibly the biggest boyband on the planet right now. Their phenomenal success is down to one thing: how easily we can relate to their story. After all, deep down, haven't we all been cynically thrown together from a pool of rejected solo singers by a scheming record industry impresario during the audition stages of a televised singing competition? Of course we have. And now, three years after first appearing on X Factor, comes One Direction's crowning glory. It's One Direction: This Is Us – a behind the scenes documentary brought to us by noted auteur Morgan Spurlock and presented in pin-sharp digital 3D. It's thought that One Direction: This Is Us will be the Don't Look Back for the generation that's had its attention span obliterated by Snapchat, so let's confirm this by looking at its latest trailer.1) We open with a glimpse into the madness that the members of One Direction must deal with every day. Thousands of fans packed outside every hotel they stay in, all screaming and waving their phones in the air and, in the case of the poor sap in the bottom left, picking the very worst time imaginable to welcome their friend John home.2) We're then treated to a brief illustrated recap of how One Direction became such a worldwide sensation. It is, admittedly, a lot like the sort of diagram you'd see in the event of a global pandemic, but that just shows how popular One Direction are. Everyone loves them. Apart from, apparently, the people on the east coast of Greenland, who much prefer the work of Justin Bieber.3) After that, we rattle through the childhoods of the various One Direction members. There's Liam, who grew up blighted by a rare medical condition requiring him to wear headphones around his neck like a pretty necklace at all times.4) Then there's Louis, whose parents forced him to sleep in a coffin in a deranged bid to turn him into a full-blown vampire.5) And there's Zayn, who turned to music when his dream of becoming the world's first child model to exclusively wear garments containing both the word "helicopter" and the word "romance" tragically fell apart.6) However, One Direction have had the last laugh by overcoming these difficulties and becoming genuine pop megastars. Apart from Liam, whose life is still compromised by his compulsive need to still wear those headphones around his neck, obviously.7) However, One Direction: This Is Us isn't just the first ever 3D movie to largely revolve around a series of two-dimensional maps and static shots of childhood photographs. No. It also contains a bit where someone's nan explains why they're so successful.8) Still not exciting enough for you? Fine, here's a bit where the parent of a One Direction member vandalises a telephone box with a message of love for her son.9) Still not exciting enough for you? Fine, here's Harry Styles in a bakery. He's wearing a hat. There's bread behind him. Look.10) Still not exciting enough for you? Fine, here's a scene where two of One Direction have a muted conversation about their confusion over what miso soup is. In digital 3D. This is going to be the best film ever.Music documentaryOne DirectionDocumentaryPop and rockMorgan SpurlockSocial mediaThe X FactorJustin BieberSimon CowellStuart Heritage

Music's very own Mr Nasty cuts trio of not-so-household names from TV medley celebrating a decade of the talent showPop stars these days: here today, gone tomorrow. Simon Cowell has ruthlessly chopped three X Factor winners – the not-so-household names Steve Brookstein, Leon Jackson and Matt Cardle – from a TV medley celebrating a decade of the talent show, according to the Daily Star. The torrid trio scored number one hits after appearing on Cowell's ITV juggernaut – but have since failed to impress music's Mr Nasty. Perhaps they could audition for the altogether-friendlier The Voice. Simon CowellThe X FactorTelevisionEntertainmentMonkey

Louis Walsh has given the X Factor producers another headache by turning up late for the ITV talent show's auditions. Is this a sign of a growing detachment by the former Westlife manager? The Sun reports that Louis always used to be the first judge to arrive on the set, but recently he has been turning up later and later. Last Wednesday, with Sharon Osbourne, Gary Barlow and Nicole Scherzinger all ready to go for the arena auditions in Wembley, Louis was still in his hotel, forcing the producers to go ahead with an empty seat on the panel. It would never have happened in Simon Cowell's day.ITV channelITV plcTelevision industryThe X FactorTelevisionLouis WalshMonkey

Little Mix – review
http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/jul/28/little-mix-review

York RacecourseMany a winner of The X Factor has experienced the huge gulf that can exist between performing for the television cameras and facing the public, but appearing as part of a package with a day of horseracing must be among the 2011 winners' more surreal gigs."Make some noise," a local radio compere tells a large crowd who don't seem aware that Little Mix just smashed the Spice Girls' US record for the highest-charting debut from a British girl group. Luckily, there are screams from the "Little Mixers", the rows of hardcore fans who have waited for this moment since Our Obsession romped home in the 1.50.The band have not been on an entirely steady trajectory since they won pop's equivalent of the Grand National. Hurdles have included the flying bottle that struck Leigh-Anne Pinnock at one recent gig. They have shifted tons of records to confirmed fans – such as the tot frantically waving a wooden horse's head on a stick during Stereo Soldier – but it takes a cover of Destiny's Child's Bootylicious to stir the uninitiated masses. The likable girls grin on defiantly, despite only having one or two really catchy songs (DNA and arms-aloft ballad Always Together) and some truly awful outfits. Simon Cowell's management team makes some odd decisions for them: who thought world domination would be helped by a taped interview section featuring Perrie Edwards's impression of a goat?"They're awful," decides one grim-faced young chap as the thinning crowd gradually says "neigh". The Little Mixers roar last year's UK No 1 Wings past the finish line, but over a longer course, it doesn't look certain they'll be able to go the distance.Rating: 2/5Pop and rockThe X FactorTelevisionEntertainmentDave Simpson
