The Week in Radio: More torture than teenage kicks with the X Factor also-rans

"It's kind of kicking off," said Radio 1's Matt Edmondson, half an hour into his preamble to the annual Teen Awards that had already seemed to last for three days. "This is amazing, there are pop stars literally everywhere," panted his co-presenter Jameela Jamil, as if she had just clapped eyes on the Virgin Mary and not Jade from Little Mix.

Media Talk podcast: BBC bias swings both ways

Hugh Muir takes us through some of the media stories making the headlines this week, including the news following Grant Shapps comments about the BBC that more people believe the corporation favours the left than the right and the latest on the government's softening stance on press regulation.

On the panel are Lis Howell, director of broadcasting at City University, and creative director of Folder Media, Matt Deegan. Together they discuss Ben Cooper's new cross-platform strategy at Radio 1 and ask the question, 'what is the first thing you touch in the morning?' The answer may surprise you.

There's more ratings woe for ITV and The X Factor as last weekend's shows were beaten again by Strictly Come Dancing, and there's a celebration of Kay Burley as she completes 25 years on Sky News.

Plus, Sam Wollaston reviews series two of The Choir on BBC 2 and series three of Fresh Meat on Channel 4.

Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall hits back at Katy Hopkins for Jesy Nelson ‘fat’ jibe: ‘She’s a really sad person’

Being the best gal pals that they are, the Little Mix ladies have jumped to the defence of their best girl Jesy Nelson, after she found herself subject to a horrible jibe from the ever charming Katie Hopkins.

We couldn’t believe our twitter feed at the weekend, when the delightful Katie took it upon herself to make a very personal and rude comment during the girls’ amazing performance of Move on the X Factor UK results show. While we were busy dancing on our sofa and shimmying while making our dinner, she was busy being as bitter and outspoken as usual.

Jesy Nelson

Katie has made a name for herself for being notoriously controversial with her outspoken ways, and it’s thought that Jesy became her latest target as she tweeted: "Packet Mix have still got a chubber in their ranks. Less Little Mix. More Pick n Mix”, before later taking a pop at Mixer fans: “Little Mix have got some fans. iccle angry girlie ones with rebellious piercings. And long socks.”

Katy Perry, Union J, Olly Murs, James Arthur and more announced for Capital FM's Jingle Bell Ball 2013

We don't know about you, but we reckon it's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas. We've been playing Justin Bieber and Mariah Carey version of All I Want For Christmas in the office for weeks (met by many dismissive stares from the I.T. guys), the crazy cat lady down the road's already got her light-up Santa in the front garden and it's FRICKIN' FREEZING.

And while it doesn't feel like two minutes since Capital FM's Summertime Ball, they've only gone and announced the first acts for this year's Jingle Bell Ball including Katy Perry (agh), Union J (wah) and Olly Murs (gah).

Jingle Bell Ball line-up announced - Jingle Bell Ball images - sugarscape.com

This year's Jingle Bell Ball's taking place on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December at London's fancy O2 Arena, with X Factor fittie James Arthur, producer-type Naughty Boy, Ellie Goulding, Rizzle Kicks, Disclosure *and* Tinie Tempah also on the Saturday line-up.

PHEW.
