Rebecca Ferguson: Freedom – review

One of the rare pleasures afforded by The X Factor was watching Rebecca Ferguson, the seventh series' runner-up, go from sweet scouser mum when she spoke to stirring soul queen when she sang. On this second album, as on her lovely debut, Heaven, she favours poise over belting it. The elegant restraint and vulnerability in her voice align well with the 60s-flavoured soul for which she's known. But she lets loose on the trumpet-punctuated My Best, a song so gloriously Whitney-like that you can almost see the scrunchied ponytails bouncing in unison.
